Lock Nago in the First World War

The Nago roadblock was the easternmost defense structure of the Riva fortress and thus part of the system of Austrian fortifications on the border with Italy .

It is located in the immediate vicinity of the village of the same name and blocked the access road from Nago (from Rovereto and Mori through the Val di Loppio) to Torbole (and on to Riva del Garda ) (today's via Europe parallel to the state road SS 240).

The Nago roadblock is one of the first defensive buildings of the Riva fortress built in 1860–62, but with its construction completely above the surface of the earth no longer corresponded to the latest findings in fortress construction at the start of the construction work. The reason why it was built this way and not differently is undoubtedly due to the system of the building authority, which was not very open to innovations. The barrier was formed from three structures, the upper battery , the lower battery and a guard building. At the lower battery and the guard building there was a lattice gate that prevented passage on the street. The armament originally consisted of a total of ten 12 cm M 61 casemate cannons distributed across both batteries , but these were replaced by 9 cm M 75 field cannons set up in the open at the beginning of the war . Four of them were in the upper battery block and two in the lower.
The entire system was only considered to be safe from field guns and less storm-free, so in 1915 it no longer had any combat value. During the entire war the plant was only used as a troop shelter and warehouse.

It is completely preserved.
