Straight ahead jazz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a straight-ahead jazz (in the relevant literature almost always as Straight Ahead Jazz ) a game attitude is modern jazz called the "no zig-zags" and "capricious" makes (such as those for the Free Jazz and Creative Jazz are typical).

This straight-ahead posture is characterized by certain conventions. In addition to the orientation towards acoustic sound generation, this includes, above all, typical accompaniment patterns of the rhythm section consisting of bass and drums (with swing e.g. walking bass and swing eighth-note rhythm on the cymbals ) and the fixed structure of songs (theme improvisation - Theme). In straight-ahead jazz, most of the program consists of swing numbers, supplemented by a number of Latin and funk pieces. Also typical (though not for classification as Straight Ahead vital) requires restricting the song selection in Real Book - standards and the jazz of the 40s to 60s-oriented band sound with appropriate instrumentation.

The significance of the straight-ahead jazz not only in neo-bop jazz , but also in jam sessions , where mostly a straight-ahead program is played. The above-mentioned conventions serve primarily to simplify the spontaneous interaction of the musicians in jam sessions.
