Straight No Chaser is an American singing group from Bloomington , Indiana .
Career
Straight No Chaser began as a student a cappella group at Indiana University in Bloomington in 1996 . The name comes from the jazz piece Straight No Chaser by Thelonious Monk . They performed with traditional and modern pieces and had great success outside of university as well. They recorded several albums and even performed at Carnegie Hall . When, after three years, the first members graduated and left the university, they were replaced by new students. This tradition continued and this university vocal group continues under the same name to this day.
Ten years after the beginning, the 1996 founding members met to perform again together. They also made a DVD with a recording of a 1998 concert. They posted their unusual and humorous version of the Christmas classic The Twelve Days of Christmas , in which they had incorporated short excerpts from other songs such as Totos Africa , on YouTube . It became very popular and was viewed over seven million times in December 2007 alone. Atlantic Records became aware of the group via the Internet and offered them a recording contract. Eight of the ten founding members, supplemented by two more singers from later years, then formed the new group under the old name (later there were further changes of members).
At the end of 2008 Straight No Chaser produced a Christmas album. Several prominent TV appearances followed, which helped the album Holiday Spirits to number 4 on the Holiday Albums (special charts for Christmas albums) and number 46 on the official sales charts. The Twelve Days of Christmas became a radio hit that made it into the top 5 of the Adult Contemporary Charts. A year later they released a second Christmas album, Christmas Cheers , which was as successful as the debut. Then they planned another album with a cappella pop songs for 2010.
