content
School principal Ozawa Gozo raped his twelve-year-old daughter Mitsuko after she was forced to hide in a cello case and watch her parents have sex . The mother of the girl named Sayuri is forced by her husband, a perverted patriarch, to switch roles with her daughter. Instead of intervening and protecting her daughter from sexual abuse and incest , Sayuri becomes jealous of Mitsuko, treats her as a rival and abuses the girl. Mitsuko tries to escape what has happened to her by fleeing into a fantasy world, the world of the Strange Circus. She tries desperately to restore a nearly normal relationship with her mother.
The previous film story suddenly turns out to be a manuscript by Taeko, a writer for erotic literature. Her young assistant Yuji sets out to unravel the secret of the connection between the writer Taeko and the girl Mitsuko and plunges into the depths of the human soul.
criticism
“ Strange Circus is a confusing, complex thriller with surrealistic moments. Right at the beginning, the viewer is thrown into the middle of a nightmare from which he will not be able to free himself until the end of the film. A carousel can be seen, and a voice from the off tells him: 'Don't worry, I was born under a scaffold.' "
