Stranger Cole (* 1945 as Wilburn Theodore Cole in Kingston , Jamaica ) is a major Jamaican Ska - Rocksteady - and reggae - singer and composer . He got his nickname Stranger because he didn't look like anyone in his family.

biography

His career began when he released his debut single Rough & Tough with well-known producer and musician Duke Reid in 1962 . This ska song quickly became a best seller in his native Jamaica. He had his next hit with the cover song Run Joe in 1965. The song originally came from the US R&B artist Louis Jordan . Stranger Cole performed regularly with duet partners such as Ken Boothe , Gladstone Anderson, or the singer Patsy Todd , with whom the ska great Derrick Morgan also appeared on stage.

Stranger Cole ended his collaboration with Duke Reid when ska music began to decline in popularity. After working with various other music producers such as Lee "Scratch" Perry , Bunny Lee, or Sonia Pottinger , he finally went to England in 1971 , where he made many appearances with Derrick Morgan and Max Romeo, especially in the early 1970s . In 1973 he emigrated to the Canadian Toronto , where he released three more albums until 1982. In 2003 Trojan Records released the sampler Bangarang: The Best of Stranger Cole 1962-1972 . Today he lives in Jamaica again.
