Stratford Langthorne Abbey was a Cistercian abbey in England . The monastery was located in Greater London ( Essex ) about ½ km southwest of the Church of West Ham , at a junction of the River Lea , the Abbey Creek .

history

The abbey was founded in 1135 by William de Mountfichet as a subsidiary of the Savigny Monastery . After the annexation of the Congregation of Savigny in 1147 it belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . In 1538 it was withdrawn from the crown. The mansion of West Ham was part of the equipment of the monastery. In 1309 it was also given to the Church of East Ham . The monastery received various lands from Barking Abbey, which resulted in various legal disputes. The monastery came to prosperity and influence quite early. The monastery suffered from the farmers' survey in 1381. In the Valor Ecclesiasticus it was valued at 511 pounds a year, which is why it escaped the first wave of the abolition of the monastery in 1536. The confiscation by the crown took place as early as 1538. The monastery was given to Sir Peter Mewtas, who let it fall into disrepair. By the end of the 18th century, all of the remains had disappeared.

Plant and buildings

Nothing remains of the abbey. The site is largely under a railway system (Jubilee Line). Excavations were carried out around 1970; Archaeological finds can be found in the Newham Heritage Service in London. The parish church of West Ham holds u. a. a stone relief.
