Streptomyces coelicolor is a gram-positive bacterium that is found in the soil . The species name means "sky-colored".

S. coelicolor is a model organism for the Actinomycetales . The following features are typical of streptomycetes:

  • They grow as a filamentous, often branched hyphae that a fungus - mycelium similar. First, the substrate mycelium is created, which forms on a solid surface. The aerial mycelium develops on this.
  • At the end of the aerial mycelium filaments, exospores form, but they do not have the resistance of the endospores .
  • Streptomycetes are antibiotic producers .
  • They have linear instead of circular chromosomes .

The S. coelicolor genome was sequenced in 2002 .

For the practical work with S. coelicolor , especially for genetic work, special work techniques are necessary.
