Striga mohair is a plant type from the genus Striga in the family of broomrape plants (Orobanchaceae).
description
Striga angolensis is up to 70 cm tall, parasitic , perennial plant . It grows stiffly upright, is densely hairy and usually not branched or provided with two or three twigs in the middle of the stem . The stem is indistinctly square. The leaves have a size of (rarely 10 to) 20 to 35 × 2 to 8 mm. They are lanceolate in shape, sitting on top, alternate, are roughly toothed and have three veins. In the lower part of the plant the leaves are longer than the internodes , but they become shorter towards the top.
The flowers are opposite to the spike-like inflorescence , where they are closer at the tip than at the base. The inflorescence is shorter than the vegetative shoot. It is accompanied by two bracts , these have a size of 5 to 8 × 2 mm and differ significantly from the foliage leaves. They are lanceolate and shorter than the calyx . The calyx is four or five ribs and 6 to 8 mm long. The calyx tube is 2.5 to 4 mm long and has four or five calyx lobes. These are almost the same shape, lanceolate and 3 to 5 mm long and thus almost the same length as the calyx tube. The crown is weakly bilobed and mauve. The corolla-tube is 12 to 13 mm long, curved and widened above the calyx and densely hairy glandular. The lobes of the lower lip are 7 to 8 × 2 mm in size and inversely ovate, the upper lip is 5 × 3 mm in size, inversely ovoid and slightly notched.
Occurrence
The distribution area of Striga angolensis extends exclusively in the swampy grasslands and other humid areas of Angola . Due to the high number of herbarium specimens , it is assumed that the species was once common, but no current occurrence is known.
