Striga forbesii is a plant type from the genus Striga in the family of broomrape plants (Orobanchaceae).

description

Striga forbesii is a 37 to 72 cm high, parasitic , annual plant . It grows rigidly upright, is unbranched or branches two to four times below the center of the stem . It is hairy scaly to stiff. The stem is rectangular and furrowed. The leaves have a size of 15 to 40 (rarely up to 90) × 4 to 12 cm, they are lanceolate, have three to five leaf veins, the edge is roughly serrated. They are opposite and are usually shorter than the internodes .

The flowers are opposite in open, grape-like inflorescences , these are shorter than the vegetative shoot. The flowers are each accompanied by two foliage-like bracts . The lower bracts are 20 to 50 (rarely up to 90) × 3 to 12 cm and longer than the calyx , the upper ones are shorter than the calyx.

The calyx is ten to fifteen ribs and 9 to 14 (rarely up to 20) mm long. The calyx tube is 4 to 6 mm long and has five identically shaped, broadly lanceolate, 5 to 9 (rarely up to 14) mm long tips. The calyx lobes are thus longer than the calyx tube. The crown is salmon-colored. The corolla-tube is 20 to 25 mm long, curved, widened above the calyx and densely hairy glandular. The lobes of the lower lip are 6 to 9 × 3 to 6 mm long, inversely ovoid and protruding. The upper lip is 3 to 6 × 6 to 9 mm in size and is notched.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 44.

Occurrence

Striga forbesii occurs from Senegal to Somalia , extends to East Africa and in the south to South Africa . It grows in relatively moist, open locations and on swampy soils and is often found in the savannahs .
