The streamlined armored catfish ( Corydoras granti ) is a small freshwater fish species from the group of armored catfish (Corydoradinae), which is widespread in the central and western Amazon region. It has been proven in the basins of the Rio Negro , Río Napo , Río Caquetá , Río Putumayo , Rio Juruá , Rio Purus and Rio Javari , as well as in various smaller, direct tributaries of the Amazon in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

features

The streamlined armored catfish can reach a standard length of about 5 cm. In cross-section, the body is elliptical and increasingly flattened towards the tail. The head profile is curved and the muzzle is rounded. The back profile is curved below the dorsal fin, then straight.

The basic color of the fish is whitish-gray and shimmers a little greenish or yellowish, especially on the gill cover and on the cleithrum . However, there are also yellowish or reddish-brown tints, especially on the back.

The streamlined armored catfish is characterized by a long, arched, continuous black stripe that runs parallel to the back profile on the sides of the body. Corydoras granti shares this characteristic with Corydoras arcuatus , C. gracilis , C. narcissus and C. urucu . Corydoras granti can be distinguished from these species by the relatively large and fused bone plates on the belly and from C. arcuatus , C. gracilis and C. narcissus additionally by the direction of the teeth on the sawn hard ray of the pectoral fins, which in Corydoras granti are directed towards the tip while in the other species they are directed towards the base of the sting. Of Corydoras arcuate can Corydoras granti the dorsal fin also by the direction of the teeth on the serrated rigid beam can be distinguished, which in C. arcuate downward while they show at Corydoras granti are directed upwards.

habitat

Corydoras granti occurs in calm blackwater rivers and streams as well as in fast flowing waters, often together with other armored catfish species, such as Corydoras ambiacus , C. arcuatus , C. elegans , C. leucomelas , C. leopardus , C. sodalis and C. trilineatus .

Systematics

The armored catfish had been known in the aquarium hobby as streamlined armored catfish for decades and was listed under the name Corydoras arcuatus in both aquarium hobby and scientific publications . In 2014, the aquarist and amateur ichthyologist Steven Grant expressed doubts that the streamlined armored catfish is C. arcuatus , since the streamlined armored catfish has a rounded snout, whereas the holotype of C. arcuatus is pointed. In August 2019, the error was cleared up by three Brazilian ichthyologists in a scientific publication and the streamlined armored catfish was described as a new species ( Corydoras granti ) and named after Steven Grant.
