Stužková slávnosť [ ˈstuʃkovaː ˈslaːvnosc ], literally in German, the loop festival , or Stužková for short , is a school celebration that is widespread in Slovakia and takes place about six months before the graduation . During a ceremony, the green ribbons are "baptized" by a special educator in the presence of the school principal and attached to the students' festive clothing by the class teacher. The green ribbon symbolizes the hope of passing the Matura exams. In its solemn design, the Stužková corresponds to a high school ball or prom .

In 1985 the Slovak rock band Elán dedicated a title to their album Hodina slovenčiny to Stužková .

history

The tradition of the Stužková slávnosť goes back to the establishment of grammar schools and secondary vocational schools in the former Czechoslovakia after the First World War . According to the ethnographer Viera Feglová, the beginnings in Slovakia come from the mining and forestry school in Banská Štiavnica .
