Stuart Freeborn

Stuart Freeborn (born September 5, 1914 in Leytonstone , London , † February 5, 2013 in Leyton ) was a British make- up artist .

Life

Stuart Freeborn was responsible for the design of masks and puppets in several Hollywood films. Freeborn first achieved international renown with his work on Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey from 1968. His most famous characters are the two Star Wars characters Yoda and Chewbacca . His son Graham Freeborn also later became a make-up artist.

In 1978 and 1984 Freeborn received the Saturn Award for best make-up for his participation in the first two Star Wars films . He was nominated for a BAFTA Film Award in 1984 for the make-up of Return of the Jedi .

He was also involved in the horror films Das Omen , See No Evil , Specter and Wedding Night in the Haunted Castle as a make-up specialist. He worked as a makeup artist and make-up specialist in the science fiction films 2001: A Space Odyssey and the Superman feature film series.

Private

His niece is the makeup artist and film costume designer Michelle Freeborn.
