The Studencki Teatr Satyryków ( Student Satirical Theater ; short: STS), from 1970 Teatr Satyryków STS , was a Polish student theater that worked in Warsaw from 1954 to 1975. The theater gave a total of 55 premieres and 3210 performances. It is considered one of the most deserving theaters of the People's Republic of Poland and a symbol of Polish October .

history

On March 13, 1954, students from Warsaw University met for the constituent assembly. The founding members included Tadeusz Adamowski, Andrzej Drawicz , Marek Lusztig , Henryk Malecha , Jerzy Markuszewski and Kazimiera Utrata . On May 2, 1954, the first piece To idzie młodość was performed. In January 1956, the theater group acquired the former Masonic lodge in the palace of Simon Gottlieb Zug at ul. Świerczewskiego 76b and expanded it into a stage. The first performance of the play Esmeralda by Jarosław Abramow-Newerly on April 28, 1958 was the first play that was banned entirely by the censors. From July 1962 to March 1963 the stage was rebuilt and expanded at state expense. The piece Mnie nie jest wsyzstko jedno was premiered on the tenth anniversary in 1964 and banned by the government after nine performances. The piece Raz się żyje! banned for the fifteenth anniversary in 1969 after eight performances. On January 1, 1970, the theater was nationalized and renamed Teatr Satyryków STS. In February 1972 the theater merged with the Teatr Rozmaitości and staged the last premiere of the STS Idzie nowe . On March 17, 1975 the last piece of the STS Solo na perkusji was performed.

Since October 1986 the building has been the seat of the Warsaw Chamber Opera , in whose entrance hall a plaque commemorates the work of the STS since 2001.
