The Studentenwerk Halle is an institution under public law (A.ö.R.) with the task of looking after and promoting the students of the associated universities and providing services in the economic, social, health, cultural and sporting fields.
history
On May 6, 1931, the "Academic Food Establishment" and the "Hallesche Studentenhilfe e. V. "to the" Studentenwerk Halle - Burse zur Tulpe ".
In 1934, the previously legally independent student unions, including the “Studentenwerk Halle - Burse zur Tulpe”, were dissolved by decree and transferred to the established Reichsstudentenwerk as co-ordinated, dependent sub-institutions.
In the GDR, the tasks of catering, dormitory management, advice, etc. were assigned in their entirety to the respective universities and were removed at the beginning of 1990. In accordance with the ordinance on the establishment of student unions of September 18, 1990, these economic bodies began their work.
The Studentenwerk Halle works according to the principles of non-profit status and self-administration and currently looks after around 30,000 students at universities in the southern part of Saxony-Anhalt.
Legal basis and tasks
On February 16, 2006, the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt passed the “Law on Student Services in the State of Saxony-Anhalt” (StuWG) and put it into effect. It determines the legal form, defines the tasks and responsibilities and regulates the actions of the organs of the Studentenwerk.
Supervised universities
The Studentenwerk Halle looks after the students of the
- Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg
- Burg Giebichenstein University of Art in Halle
- University of Merseburg
- Anhalt University of Applied Sciences
- Evangelical College for Church Music Halle (BAföG only).
Training grants (BAföG & Co.)
The Federal Act on Individual Promotion of Training (BAföG) was brought into being in 1971. Since then, it has secured the livelihood of students if they are unable to do so on their own or with the help of their parents. The Office for Educational Support provides advice on all issues relating to BAföG and other study financing options. In addition to processing the applications for funding from the supervised students, the Office for Funding in Halle also processes the international BAföG for Finland throughout Germany.
University catering
The university catering facilities have the task of offering nutritionally balanced and inexpensive, but high-quality catering. This applies in particular to lunch in the canteens. In addition, cafeterias provide intermediate supplies in the morning and afternoon and complement the lunch options in the canteens.
Student living
The Studentenwerk Halle manages a total of 28 dormitories with over 3,500 places for students. Due to the continuous renovation, almost all dormitories are now state-of-the-art and offer a variety of forms of living from larger shared apartments to individual apartments.
All dormitories have Internet access, which in most cases takes place via the data network of the associated university, so that bandwidth is available well above DSL level.
A special feature compared to other providers is the complete rental, in which the operating costs are always factored in. A rude awakening due to a service charge statement is therefore impossible for the young students.
social services
The Studentenwerk offers students a comprehensive service in dealing with psychosocial, social and financial difficulties in the study environment. In addition to providing a networked range of information and advice, the Studentenwerk also helps by allocating its own funds (financial aid, aid for books and learning materials, free tables and much more).
organs
The organs of the Studentenwerk are the board of directors and the managing director.
The Board of Directors advises and decides on all matters of fundamental importance, in particular on the annual business plan. Other important tasks include passing resolutions on the articles of association and issuing and changing the contribution regulations.
The managing director Hüskens represents the student union externally and manages the day-to-day business.
