James Stevens (politician, 1768)

James Stevens (born July 4, 1768 in New Canaan , Colony of Connecticut , †  April 4, 1835 in Stamford , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1819 and 1821 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After studying law and being admitted to the bar, James Stevens began practicing the profession in Stamford. He was a member of the Democratic Republican Party . Between 1804 and 1818 he was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives . In 1819 he was a probate judge at Stamford.

In the state-wide held congressional elections of 1818, Stevens was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC for the sixth seat in Connecticut . There he succeeded Nathaniel Terry of the Federalist Party on March 4, 1819 . Up until March 3, 1821, however, he only served one term in Congress . After serving in the House of Representatives, Stevens was Justice of the Peace in Stamford until 1826. He had held this office since 1819. From 1822 to 1829, Stevens was also a postman in Stamford. In 1823 he served as a district judge in Fairfield County. Otherwise he worked as a lawyer again. James Stevens died on April 4, 1835 in his home town of Stamford and was buried there.
