The animals occur in the Palearctic from northern Spain , east to Siberia . They are also found in the British Isles . The northern limit of distribution is roughly the Arctic Circle . They live under leaves and moss on rotting plant material. They occur in forests, fields and meadows from the plains up to an altitude of about 2000 meters. But they can also be found in dry biotopes. The adults appear from late summer or early autumn and are very common. They overwinter on moss-covered trunks.
