Sturges W. Bailey

Sturges W. Bailey (born February 11, 1919 in Waupaca , Wisconsin , † November 30, 1994 ) was an American mineralogist .

Life

Bailey studied geology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison , interrupting his service in the US Navy during World War II . In 1948 he obtained his master’s degree. He then studied X-ray crystallography in Cambridge until 1951 and was then an assistant at the University of Wisconsin, where he later became a professor. From 1968 to 1971 he was head of the Faculty of Geosciences. In 1989 he retired.

He specialized in clay minerals and was editor of Clay and Clay Minerals from 1972 to 1975 and co-editor of the Journal of Sedimentary Petrology from 1960 to 1970 .

Honors and memberships

From 1971 to 1972 he was President of the Clay Minerals Society and 1973/74 of the Mineralogical Society of America , whose Roebling Medal he received in 1990. In 1992 he became an honorary member of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland . The Clay Minerals Society presents the Bailey Award in his honor.

A mineral newly discovered in 1986 was named baileychlor in his honor .
