Stuttgart Colloquium on the Historical Geography of Antiquity

The Stuttgart Colloquium on the Historical Geography of Antiquity is an event initiated and organized by the German ancient historians Eckart Olshausen and Holger Sonnabend together with Ernst Kirsten on interdisciplinary topics related to the main topic of ancient historical geography .

The colloquium is a public event. Events have been held in three-year cycles since 1981, in which - in the absence of a university connection to the subject and thus a chair in the historical geography of antiquity - research perspectives on the topic are scientifically discussed and discussed. Participants are specialists from the disciplines of archeology , ancient oriental studies , classical philology , geography , geology , climatology and philosophy .

The events consistently aim to relate historical findings to today's problems. Aspects of ancient technology, political, social, economic and cultural contexts shape the discussion as well as modern research results using new instruments and methods.
