Nuraghe Su Mulinu

Su Mulinu

The Nuraghe Su Mulinu is a rare combination of a corridor and a dome uraghe . Its oldest part originated in the initial phase of the Nuragic culture on Sardinia between 1800 and 1500 BC. This mixed form can only be found in the Nuraghe S'Ulivera (in Silanus ).

Su Mulinu is located about one kilometer southwest of Villanovafranca in the province of Sud Sardegna on a hill above the valley of the Riu Mannu . Nuraghi are prehistoric and early historical towers of the Bonnanaro culture (2200–1600 BC) and the subsequent nuraghi culture (around 1600–400 BC) in Sardinia, which is inextricably linked with it.

The excavation shows three phases of construction or expansion. First a multi-storey, triangular bastion of round towers and elliptical courtyards arranged around the central tower was built over a system of partly long corridors with terminal oval chambers (the protonuraghen) located underground. The area was later expanded by a wall with four round towers. The last renovation added tower 5, the construction of which is much more modern. The finds indicate a decline in use from the 7th century onwards, which began in the 4th century BC at the latest. Ends. However, the space was subsequently used until the Middle Ages.

Today the square belongs to the Museo archeologico Su Mulinu.
