Su Sterru

The approximately 270 m deep karst cave Su Sterru ( German:  the throat ) in the Voragine del Golgo on the Su Golgo plateau near Baunei in the province of Nuoro in Sardinia is one of the deepest caves in Sardinia and almost unique in Europe. Coordinate position: 40 ° 05'01.7 "N 9 ° 40'25.2" E.

It is about 400 meters above sea level and has an elliptical cross-section. In the middle part the throat is up to 25.0 meters wide. In 1957 Sardinian cave explorers explored the abyss for the first time and discovered that after about the first thirty meters the basalt layer ended and limestone formed the subsoil. They discovered that the hole, believed to be a volcanic gorge, was a karst cave that had formed as a result of erosion by rainwater. The basalt cork that collapsed had opened a million year old karst well.

The throat has been a "natural monument" since 1993 and is populated by an interesting world of animals, including the Sardinian cave salamander ( Hydromantes imperialis ), the spider Porrohomma errans and crustaceans such as the Trischoniscus woodlice .

Nearby is the small pilgrimage church of San Pietro di Golgo with the human- faced Baitylos .
