San Pietro di Golgo

The small pilgrimage church of San Pietro di Golgo (still called Santu Pedru Golgo around 1800) is located above Baunei on a plateau called Su Golgo made of basalt lava , in the province of Nuoro in Sardinia . In front of the church there is a human- faced baity lot .

It is surrounded by a number of monistenes (also called cumbessias = pilgrims' huts), such as those found at the multi-day festivals at the Ipogeo di San Salvatore and at the Festa di San Francesco in Lula and at San Antonio Abate in Orosei . They used to be at San Mauro, in Sorgono, where there was even a Palio , and at the Santuario di San Priamo.

One of the few Sardinian baitylos with a face stands on the forecourt.

Surroundings

To the south of the church there is an almost 300 m deep karst gorge , Su Sterru or “Voragine del Golgo”, which forms one of the deepest valleys in the Mediterranean. There are granite quarries nearby.
