Sabin (Bulgaria)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sabin or Sawin ( Bulgarian Сабин , or Савин) was the ruler of Bulgaria from 765 to 766. He succeeded Khan Telez on the throne. Little is known about his life, apparently he was either a son or brother of Khan Kormisosch and belongs to the Wokil family .

After Telez was killed in the battle of Anchialus , Sabin was enthroned as the new ruler, apparently with the help of the Bulgarian nobility. After the defeat at Anchialus, he immediately tried to negotiate a new peace treaty with the Byzantine Empire . When these peace negotiations, which were carried out secretly by his agents, were exposed, he lost the support of the Bulgarian nobility and was removed from office at a meeting.

Abandoned by his supporters, Sabin fled to Constantinople via Nessebar in 766 . After his family was able to flee to Constantinople with the help of the Byzantine emperor Constantine V , he spent the rest of his life in exile in the Byzantine capital. Any attempts to rehabilitate him have failed.
