The Suchowej or Suchowei is a dry and hot fall wind that occurs in summer and blows in the southern Russian steppe. It is one of the so-called front side winds that form on the front of warm fronts .

It is characteristic of the region around the Caspian Sea and Kazakhstan . Its air temperature is 20–25 ° C, its relative humidity less than 30% and it usually blows at a moderate speed (5–20 m / s). It forms when tropical air masses break in on the edge of high pressure areas . It often dries out the upper soil layers and deposits a layer of drifting sand up to several centimeters thick. The low mobility of anticyclones is responsible for the persistence of the Suchowej, which can last for a few days. If there is insufficient soil moisture, it causes drought and destroys crops of grain and fruit crops. The Suchowejs spread with the tropical air masses to the forest steppe of the CIS , but more often they invade the semi-deserts and steppes . Forest protection strips , soil irrigation and melioration measures serve as protection against Suchowejs .
