The Sudbury Valley School is a democratic school . It is located in Framingham , Massachusetts, and was founded in 1968 by Daniel Greenberg , Mimsy Sadofsky and others.

concept

Each of the approximately 200 schoolchildren between the ages of four and 19 decides for themselves what, when and how they learn, or what they spend their time with. Classes in the traditional sense only come about if students expressly request it. Such learning appointments are the only time (self) commitment of the students. Otherwise there is complete freedom from time pressure. According to the concept of the school, self-determined learning is only possible through this complete temporal self-determination .

The school is not divided into grade levels or age groups. Age mix is another important feature of the school. Its founder called it a "secret weapon". It enables students to learn from one another rather than from a single teacher. Students are not assessed.

The Sudbury Valley School is run by a weekly school meeting. Every student and every employee has a voice in it. The school assembly also decides who is allowed to work as an employee at the school in the next school year. The judiciary committee , which is mostly made up of students, is responsible for complaints about violations of school rules .

In the annual School Assembly , not only students and employees of the school but also the parents of the students have the right to vote . The School Assembly approves the annual budget presented by the school assembly and decides on the award of school certificates and changes to the statutes.

The Sudbury Valley School is the model for around 45 similar schools that are called “ Sudbury Schools ” and work according to the Sudbury model. Most of them are located in the USA (e.g. The Circle School ), with others in Japan , Israel , Denmark , Belgium , the Netherlands and France .

The New School Hamburg has existed in Germany since the 2007/2008 school year . a. refers to the Sudbury Valley School. Pop singer Nena was a driving force behind the foundation. 80 pupils can already attend this school in Hamburg. The TING school in Berlin, which was also founded in 2007, sees itself as a Sudbury school. In September 2014, the Sudbury School in Ammersee opened in Bavaria.

The Iederwijs schools in the Netherlands were also based on the Sudbury Valley School.
