The New School Hamburg (NSH) is a general education private school in Hamburg-Rahlstedt . The school was founded in 2007. a. Nena and her significant other involved. The school is based on the Sudbury Schools concept , which in turn was influenced by Summerhill , and is a member of the European Democratic Education Community .

History and direction

Sudbury schools are represented on every continent, numerically most numerous in the USA and Israel . Sudbury start-up initiatives by parents, teachers and students have existed in Germany since 2000 in various federal states. The New School Hamburg is the first school based on the Sudbury model , which has existed since 1968 , that was officially approved in Germany.

Nena publicly advertised the founding of the school and emphasized her personal understanding of the anti-intellectual orientation of the Sudbury concept in her choice of words and statements . This led to criticism from idealistic and active Sudbury representatives. The school was founded by Nena, her partner Philipp Palm (also one of the headmasters), Silke Steinfadt and Thomas Simmerl.

School board is the club Neue Schule Hamburg . Like all other private schools in Hamburg, the school receives a grant from the city's public funds. In the years 2012 to 2016 this financial aid amounted to around half a million euros per budget year with around 80 students. The charity foundation contributes further funds, the school fee to be paid by the parents is 170 euros per month.

The school can accommodate 85 students from 5 to 17 years old, i.e. H. 1-10 School year. The school thus includes both a primary school and a district school of the lower secondary level . Exams for the first and middle school leaving certificate (MSA) are taken externally. In 2015/2016 twelve teachers were employed at the school. The seemingly small number of students is explained by the concept of Sudbury. There is a permanent waiting list.

In the first school year (2008), the media reported on “violence problems and organizational chaos” at the school. For example, “a student with a concussion should have been treated on an outpatient basis”. The school denied the allegations.

According to the “ democratic school ” approach , all school rules are decided in the school assembly, in which pupils and teachers have equal voting rights . The resolution committee , which consists of a teacher and four students, meets daily to settle disputes or sanction violations of rules.
