Suddenly is a song from the 2012 film adaptation of the musical Les Misérables . The song is not part of the original musical and was written especially for the film by Tom Hooper . The song was nominated for an Oscar and the Golden Globe for best film song . It also won a Satellite Award .

History of origin

Tom Hooper dealt not only with the musical model, but also with the literary model Die Elenden by Victor Hugo . He came across a place where Jean Valjean promised to save Fantine's daughter Cosette and took her under his wing. This scene was left out in the musical version. Hooper commissioned his composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and the two lyricists Alain Boublil and Herbert Kretzmer with the implementation. Kretzmer came up with the title, the rest arose from teamwork.

Hugh Jackman , who portrayed Jean Valjean in the film, is the singer for the play. Like all songs in the musical adaptation, the song was sung live by the actors. The film contains both the song itself and a recapitulation . The song is also featured on the official soundtrack album Les Misérables: Highlights from the Motion Picture Soundtrack , released December 21, 2012 via Universal Republic .

Awards

As the only new song, Suddenly was the only piece of music in the film that could be nominated for an Oscar. In fact, the song lost to Skyfall from the film of the same name , sung by Adele . Suddenly was also nominated for the Golden Globe and the Critics' Choice Movie Award , but was subject to the same song there. For this it won the Satellite Award and the Houston Film Critics Society Award 2013 .
