Sue Sarafian

Sue Sarafian Jehl (born February 14, 1917 in Malden , Massachusetts as Sue Sarafian , † April 13, 1997 in Maitland , Florida ) was the personal secretary of General Dwight D. Eisenhower . She is considered the most famous member of the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC), which served in the American military during World War II .

The Armenian origin Sue Sarafian was on February 14, 1917 Malden in the state of Massachusetts born. She was the oldest of five daughters. Her parents came from Keghi near Harput in the Ottoman Empire . Sarafian attended Detroit Public School , graduated from Highland Park High School in 1934, and graduated with Honors from the Detroit Business Institute. She was a founding member of the Detroit branch of the Armenian Youth Federation .

Sarafian's professional career began in American federal agencies; for a year she worked as a secretary for the Internal Revenue Service and the United States Census Bureau . She then spent six years as the private secretary and chief cashier with the American National Insurance Company in Galveston , Texas.

Sarafian decided to take part in World War II because she was the oldest of the five girls and had no brothers who could have done military service. In July 1942, she became the first woman from Detroit to become a member of the recently founded WAAC, which provided secretaries, telephone operators and cooks for the army. She served in the rank of sub-lieutenant in the United States Army in Normandy and the Rhineland . From January 1943 to April 1947 she was General Eisenhower's personal secretary.

Sue Sarafian Jehl, who was married to Ronald Jehl, died of cancer on April 13, 1997, at the age of 80 in her home in Maitland, Florida. She was cremated and buried in Arlington National Cemetery .
