The Sugpiaq (literal translation: real people ) or Alutiiq (literal translation: Aleutian Islands ), also Pacific Gulf Yupik , are Alaska Natives and one of the Yupik - Eskimo tribes in southern Alaska . The Sugpiaq (or Sugpiat) habitat is the Alaska Peninsula and the southern coast of mainland Alaska (and Kodiak Island ) around the Kenai Peninsula and Prince William Sound . The current population is estimated at 3,500, of whom about 200 speak Alutiiq (proper names: Sugcestun, Sugtestun, Sugt'stun ), an Eskimo-Aleut language.
