Suhaib D. Webb (originally William Webb , born June 29, 1972 in Oklahoma ) is an American Islamic activist, speaker, and religious scholar of Christian origin. According to a report by the British government, like Hamza Yusuf, he is considered a moderate representative of Islam in the USA .

biography

Webb comes from a Christian family, his grandfather was a preacher. At the age of 14 he lost interest in religion and, according to his own account, was experiencing a spiritual crisis. In 1992, he converted to Islam , to which it is acting as a hip-hop - DJ gave up a degree in education at the University of Central Oklahoma completed and a Senegalese Sheikh Islam and the Arabic language learned. First known in Oklahoma as a young American preacher and activist, he studied at the Sharia Faculty of the Azhar in Cairo on a scholarship from the Muslim American Society . He has a large following among Muslim youth.

Webb was an imam in various Muslim communities in North America. In 2011 he became Imam of the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center (ISBCC), the largest Islamic center in New England .

In the public sector, he is Adjunct Assistant Professor of Public Service at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University .

He was one of the US signatory to the Amman Message ( Amman Message ) and one of the (later) the signatories of A Common Word . As early as 2010, he was included in a “List of the 500 Most Influential Muslims” of the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center in Jordan and the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding in Washington, DC , also in the latest edition.

From his residence in Santa Clara , he and other Muslim clergymen joined a Jewish group in 2010 that visited the former Dachau concentration camp and Auschwitz . In 2013, he condemned the attack on the Boston Marathon as radical.
