The Sulawesi dwarf squirrels ( Prosciurillus ) are a genus of the squirrel family (Sciuridae) that is native to the island of Sulawesi, which belongs to Indonesia, and some neighboring islands .
features
Sulawesi dwarf squirrels are inconspicuously brown in color. The head body length is about 15 cm, plus 9 cm tail.
Systematics
They are usually assigned to the fine squirrels , but their affiliation is controversial because of some anatomical deviations from the typical skull features of the fine squirrels.
There are currently seven types:
- Mengkoka Miniature Squirrel ( Prosciurillus abstrusus ), Mengkoka Mountains in southeast Sulawesi
- Alston miniature squirrel ( Prosciurillus alstoni )
- Whitish Sulawesi miniature squirrel ( Prosciurillus leucomus ), Sulawesi and neighboring islands of Buton and Kabaena
- Common Sulawesi miniature squirrel ( Prosciurillus murinus ), Northeast and Central Sulawesi
- Sangihe miniature squirrel ( Prosciurillus rosenbergi ), Sangihe Islands
- Topapu miniature squirrel ( Prosciurillus topapuensis )
- Weaver's miniature squirrel ( Prosciurillus weberi ), Central Sulawesi
The Sangihe miniature squirrel is sometimes listed as a subspecies of the white Sulawesi miniature squirrel. The latter species P. abstrusus is only known from a range of hills and is listed as endangered by the IUCN . However, it is not known how common or rare it really is. These are hidden squirrels living in the top of the rainforest that have hardly been explored.
Outwardly, they resemble the New World Little Squirrel , but there is no closer relationship here.
