The Sangihe dwarf croissant ( Prosciurillus rosenbergii ) is a Hörnchenart from the kind of Sulawesi dwarf croissant ( Prosciurillus ) that are endemic to the to Indonesia belonging Sangihe Islands occurs.

features

The Sangihe dwarf squirrel reaches a head-trunk length of about 19 centimeters. The tail is about 18 centimeters long, which is almost as long as the rest of the body. The back color of the animals is strong chestnut brown, the belly side is brown-gray to sand-colored brown and the tail is black. The species can be distinguished from other croissants of the same size by the complete absence of ear tufts, nape patches and a dorsal midline.

The Sangihe Dwarf Squirrel is endemic to the to Indonesia belonging Sangihe Islands before. In the late 19th century, populations on Sangihe Besar , Siau , Tahulandang and Ruang were detected, but due to intensive timber management, it is assumed that the distribution area is now significantly limited.

Way of life

No data are available on the way of life of the Sangihe dwarf squirrel, but based on its physique it is assumed that the species, like other species of the genus, lives predominantly in the canopy of the forests. On the main island of Sangihe, the species occurs mainly in primary forests, but can also be found in anthropogenically influenced areas and cultivated forests.

Systematics

The Sangihe dwarf squirrel is classified as an independent species within the genus of the Sulawesi dwarf squirrel ( Prosciurillus ), which currently consists of seven species, while only five species were recognized until 2005. The first scientific description comes from Fredericus Anna Jentink from 1879, who described the species using individuals from Sangihe Besar.

Apart from the nominate form, no subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Status, threat and protection

The Sangihe miniature squirrel is listed as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) due to its stable population. The species can be found regularly within the range and is also found in anthropogenically influenced areas.
