Fredericus Anna Jentink (born August 20, 1844 in Wymbritseradiel , Friesland province , † November 4, 1913 in Leiden ) was a Dutch zoologist.

Live and act

In 1875 Jentink became a taxidermist at the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (today Naturalis ) and in 1884 he took over the post of director from Hermann Schlegel , which he held until his death in 1913. He was also the editor of the museum journal "Notes from the Leyden Museum". In 1895 he was chairman of the third International Zoological Congress in Leiden and was one of the founding members of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature , along with Philip Lutley Sclater , Raphaël Blanchard (1857-1919), Julius Victor Carus and Charles Wardell Stiles (1867-1941). Jentink's research focus was the systematics of mammals. He described several Beutelsäuger-, bat and Nagetiertaxa, including the tree shrews Beutler , Schlegel pseudocheiridae , the caudal glands-free-tailed bat , the white-winged vampire bat , Jentinks dormouse and the trefoil-toothed giant rat . In 1886 he described the species of monkey Cercopithecus signatus (sometimes referred to as Jentink's monkey in German) on the basis of a dead animal from Diergaarde Blijdorp in Rotterdam . The Museum in Leiden acquired the specimen in 1877 and it is still unclear what the origin of this species of monkey is. Alternatively, a hybrid of the great white-nosed monkey and the blue-mouthed monkey is suspected.

Jentink's scientific publications include Catalog ostéologique des mammifères (1887), C atalogue systématique des mammifères (1892) and Mammals Collected by the Members of the Humboldt Bay and the Merauke River Expeditions: Nova Guinea (1907).

Dedication names
