history

The company was founded in 1922 by F. Beer. The company's first headquarters were on Badenerstrasse in Zurich before the company moved to a new building on Sihlquai 268 in 1922. As of 1930, "Sullana" was introduced and sold as a brand. In 1939 the company was transformed into "Sullana AG ".

In 1940, Sullana AG was described in words and pictures in a special issue of the Neu-Zürich series as a leading company in the local cigarette industry that had introduced the "high culture of oriental cigarette production" in Switzerland. At the time, it was advertised as the most frequently smoked 1 franc cigarette in Switzerland and said, “It doesn't scratch, that's your secret”.

In 1964 the company bought a factory building at Kastellstrasse 1/3 in Wetzikon and moved the administration there in 1965 and production there in 1966. Around this time, cigarette production in Zurich was stopped.

1963 the stock company was taken over by the Turmac Tobacco Comp. BV Amsterdam bought up and integrated into the Rothmans group . The then 100 employees were invited to Amsterdam to mark the company's sixtieth anniversary. In 1983 the sales and shipping department, which was previously located in Geneva , was also relocated to Wetzikon. That year 1.6 billion cigarettes were produced, 60 percent of which were exported. In 1985 an open day was held after renovation and rationalization investments totaling 5 million francs. The company's profit this year was 1.8 million francs.

In 1996 production in Wetzikon was stopped. Like many other companies before, from which she had partly taken over the employees, she became a victim of the concentration movement in the tobacco industry.

Buildings with advertisements (2018)

After Sullana AG moved out, the building was first used by a sales company for cigarette and jukeboxes. It was later rented by a design and nail studio that has been located there until now (as of 2018). The facade advertisement located there is viewed by both the Zurich urban planning authority and the typography expert François Baer as an elegant and stylishly preserved testimony to the historically significant industrial past of the Sihlquai. Although it would have been legally possible, protection of cultural property has not yet been sought.

The building is owned by the Canton of Zurich , which bought it as part of the Zurich Expressstrasse Y project , which was not implemented . A new discussion about the receipt of the advertising lettering should only arise in the event of a sale or renovation, which is currently (as of 2018) not planned.

Others

In the first half of the 1930s, 298 different motifs with photos of Swiss views were added to the packs. In contrast to other companies, there was no scrapbook .

The corporation had a company pension fund in the legal form of a foundation , which has since been dissolved.

In 1988, the workforce was allowed to work artistically for two weeks under the guidance of Jörg Lenzlinger , Rolf Konrad and Werner Casty.

Sullana cigarette boxes are highly traded collectibles on eBay .
