history

Sullivan Railroad Company stock dated April 14, 1854

The company was founded on July 10, 1846 in New Hampshire under the name Sullivan Railroad and intended to build a railway line along the east bank of the Connecticut River between Bellows Falls and Windsor , which connected to the planned rail network at both ends via a bridge. Construction began in the spring of 1847 and the standard-gauge line went into operation in 1849 .

When the Vermont Valley Railroad (VVR) closed the gap, the Sullivan County Railroad was connected to New York City in 1851. The Vermont Central Railroad (VCR) owned the section between the river bridge and the terminus in Windsor and there was a lease agreement with the SCRR.

In September 1861, the VVR leased the Sullivan Railroad, but the contract was dissolved again in 1866. From then on, the VCR had the SRR under lease, while the actual company was owned by the Northern Railroad of New Hampshire . The lease with the Central Vermont Railroad , which had been operating as Central Vermont Railroad since 1871 , was also terminated in 1876 for financial reasons. In the early 1870s, it was reorganized into Sullivan County Railroad . On October 1, 1880, the Northern sold the railway company to the Vermont Valley Railroad. The Boston and Maine Railroad leased both trains on January 1, 1925 and finally bought them in 1949. The line is still in operation today, belongs to the New England Central Railroad and is used by this and the Pan Am Railways in freight traffic and by Amtrak in passenger traffic served.
