Sultanate of Deli

Deli is a sultanate in the eastern part of Sumatra , which was founded in 1630 . The tributary kingdom (1630 to 1814) became an independent sultanate in 1814 when it gained independence from the Siak sultanate. Its capital is Medan and the surface is 1,820 km². It continues to this day, but since Indonesia's independence in 1945 it has no powers and is more a symbol of Medan's history.

In the middle of the 15th century, the ruler of Aceh converted to the Islamic faith. The founder of the Sultanate of Aceh was Ali Mughayat Syah († 1530), who began to expand his control over the whole of North Sumatra from 1520 onwards. Under the twelfth Sultan of Aceh Iskandar Muda (1583? –1636) the sultanate reached its greatest territorial extent, in 1612 the "young Alexander" (literal translation of Iskandar Muda) conquered and annexed the area of ​​the later Sultanate Deli, which until then was owned by the Portuguese was controlled.

The Dutch intervention of 1861 was followed a year later by a contract with the Dutch East Indies that strengthened Deli's independence from Siak and Aceh. Today the area is part of Indonesia .
