The Sultan's Head Rock is a rocky outcrop on the Antarctic Ross Island . It rises 12 km southeast of the Vee Cliffs on the east side of the Hut Point Peninsula .
The descriptive name goes back to Thomas Vere Hodgson (1864-1926) who collected rock samples here on the British Discovery Expedition (1901-1904) under the direction of the British polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott . Hodgson felt reminded of the turbaned head of a sultan at this rock formation .
