The Suluhornvogel ( Anthracoceros montani ) is a rare species of bird in the hornbill family .
description
The Suluhornvogel reaches a size of 70 centimeters. The tail is white. The plumage, the beak, the bare skin of the face and the helmet are black. The back and wings are black with a greenish tinge. The iris is cream colored in males and dark brown in females. The beak of the helmetless young birds has a bright tip.
distribution
In the past, the Sulu hornbill occurred on the three islands of Sanga-Sanga, Jolo and Tawi-Tawi in the Sulu Archipelago . Today it is only found on Tawi-Tawi.
Habitat, way of life and food
The Suluhornvogel inhabits primary dipterocarp forests, preferably on mountain slopes. It feeds on berries and fruits and needs large trees to nest.
Danger
Still common in the 19th century, the Suluhornbird is one of the rarest bird species in the Philippines today . In 1999 only 40 copies were counted. The main reasons for its rarity are the destruction of the habitat and hunting. The islands of Jolo and Sanga-Sanga are almost completely deforested and on Tawi-Tawi the Sulu hornbirds serve as targets for the military. In addition, the young birds are killed to obtain food. A count in 2019 resulted in 27 copies.
