( Robinson & Kloos , 1916)

The Sumatran mountain squirrel ( Sundasciurus altitudinis ) is a species of squirrel from the genus of the Sunda tree squirrel ( Sundasciurus ). It occurs on the island of Sumatra in higher mountain areas.

features

The Sumatran mountain squirrel reaches a head-trunk length of about 15.0 centimeters, the tail is about 11.5 centimeters long and thus shorter than the rest of the body. It corresponds in its appearance to the Sunda slender squirrel ( Sundasciurus tenuis ), but has a significantly longer fur. In addition, the hands and feet are more yellowish and the stomach side has a gray color.

There are significant differences in the morphology of the skull, mainly due to the longer part of the snout (rostrum) and the very small tympanic bullae .

distribution

The Sumatran mountain squirrel occurs exclusively in the high mountain areas between 488 and 2530 meters on the Indonesian island of Sumatra in the provinces of Aceh on Gunung Leuser and on Kerinchi south of Padang .

Way of life

Very little data is available on the way of life of the Sumatran mountain squirrel. It lives in dense rainforest areas in all layers of vegetation from the bushes to the taller trees. It feeds mainly on nuts similar to Eckern.

Systematics

The Sumatran mountain squirrel was not regarded as a separate species until 2010 and was accordingly not included in Wilson & Reeder 2005, edited by Richard W. Thorington Jr. In the Squirrels of the World from 2012, also edited by Thorington, however, the species was considered and listed as an independent species by Robert den Tex and others from 2010 due to a molecular biological work on the phylogeny of the genus.

Apart from the nominate form, no subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Status, threat and protection

There is no information on the status or endangerment of the Sumatran mountain squirrel, the species has not yet been included in the IUCN database .
