Sunart ( Scottish Gaelic Suaineart ) is a rural area and civil parish in southwest Lochaber , Highland , Scotland , on the north bank of Loch Sunart . Today it is often considered part of Ardnamurchan . The main village is Strontian , at the head of the loch , where Ardnamurchan High School , the local fire and police station and other facilities are located.
The area is bounded to the south by the eastern part of Loch Sunart and partly by Morvern , to the west by the Ardnamurchan peninsula (from Salen ), to the north by Loch Shiel and to the east and northeast by the Ardgour region, from which it is delimited by a range of hills becomes. The area can now be reached via the Corran ferry or the A861 from the east, although this road via Moidart also allows access from Lochailort in the north-west. Although the area seems isolated today, the ship used to be the main means of transport in the West Highlands and the region was integrated into the coastal economy and culture.
Almost all of Sunart's population lives in a narrow strip of small settlements on the north coast of Loch Sunart. The interior, including the coast of Loch Shiel, consists of rough, hilly land, often moorland and forest, dominated by the main hill, the Beinn Resipol .
The most important industries in the area are tourism and salmon farming .
nature
The area is known for the abundance of wildlife and is home to some of the best preserved ancient temperate Atlantic oak forests that once covered most of the west coast of Scotland, Wales, Cornwall and Britain but are now only found in isolated regions. Loch Sunart itself is also rich in flora and fauna. In the past, salmon and trout fishing was important for local hotels, but like almost everywhere in Europe, fish are no longer as numerous in spring and summer.
Because of the mild, humid oceanic climate , the area is said to be one of the most varied in Europe when it comes to mushroom , lichen and moss species .
A campaign is currently underway to combat the population of Rhododendron ponticum , an invasive , introduced species of neophyte .
