The Sunday Service Choir is an American gospel choir founded in 2019 by music producer , rapper and singer Kanye West .

history

Since the first Sunday of 2019, Kanye West has held weekly Christian services , English Sunday Service . At the beginning, only selected guests who received an invitation from the musician were allowed to participate; the visitors, mostly celebrities , also had to sign a confidentiality clause. Later the services were also held in public. The Sunday Service Choir was originally called The Samples . It was specially created for these religious events in order to provide the background music for the event, which was centered on singing. It was directed by Jason White ; Philip Cornish was the music director. Nikki Grier was responsible for editing the lyrics, Steve Epting was the vocal arranger . The weekly church services were the subject of the media, especially because the new devotional Christian attitude towards life was seen as a change in West's image, which was particularly noticeable in the previous year through political provocations. On Easter Sunday 2019, the Sunday Service was held at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival .

Later that year, the choir began to release music commercially as a full group outside of the events. His first officially released recording was the song Every Hour from Kanye West's studio album Jesus Is King , on which he was a guest performer . With this song, West only appears as a producer; the singing is completely taken over by the choir. The title was a commercial success for the group and was able to position itself at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA . It also made it into the charts in Australia (33rd), Canada (57th) and France (130th).

On December 25, 2019, the singing group's debut album Jesus Is Born was released. It debuted at number 2 on the Top Gospel Albums charts and reached number 73 on the Billboard 200 . The Sunday Service Choir mainly interprets cover versions of previously published songs of various genres and artists in gospel style , including some solo pieces from West.
