Sound swimming

Sundschwimmen on August 26, 1951, held as the GDR's 2nd marine championships with 286 participants

The Sundschwimmen is being transferred annually international swim meet in Stralsund . This distance through the Strelasund is 2315 meters.

The route between Altefähr on Rügen and the Hanseatic city of Stralsund is regularly covered on the first Saturday of July each year . In rare exceptional cases, however, the route had to be relocated due to extremely bad weather.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was no swimming in the sound in 2020 .

procedure

In Altefähr, all swimmers start together in a mass start. The route is marked by buoys , and spotlights that are installed on the Stralsund shore point the direction. The destination is the seaside resort in Stralsund, where the swimmers are usually greeted by a very large audience.

The safety of the participants is guaranteed by escort boats. Medical care is also provided on land.

Due to security measures, the registration capacity is limited to 1070, this number is usually reached after a few minutes for registrations for swimming in the Sund.

history

There are reports as early as 1825 that two Prussian officers and a civilian had swum the route. In 1837, six men went swimming from Stralsund to Altefähr on August 19 of that year . Three of them made it by swimming in an hour and a half, the others had to be taken on board the escort boats.

Sund swimming has been a regular event since the 1920s. The first winners to swim across the Sund in 1926 were Franz Wegner for the men and Emmi Grotnemann for the women. Irma Struck, b. Hübner (1919–2009) won swimming from 1932 (in 38 minutes, 27 seconds) to 1937, and in 1934 even as the overall winner. Her record from 1932 lasted for 20 years. Irma Struck took part in the competition in 1994. After 1933 the spectacle developed into a political issue in which National Socialist propaganda created heroes. In 1940 the swimming in the Sund was canceled because of the Second World War , but took place again in 1941.

From 1946 the Free German Youth organized swimming; it remained the organizer until 1949. In 1948, swimming in the sundae was advertised as an open competition for the first time. In the 1950s, the event lost its popularity and was canceled entirely for a few years. It was not until 1965 that the swimming in the Sund, now organized by the GDR water rescue service , was reorganized.

In 1968 a participant had started the course in the backstroke and led the field for a long time until he lost his course and swam back towards the start. When this was brought to his attention, he did the rest of the way to the finish in the breaststroke .

Swimming has been organized by the German Life Saving Society ( DLRG ) since the 1990s . Since the end of the 1990s there has also been a children's swim in the Sund, which, however, takes place parallel to Stralsund's fortified Strelasundufer ( Sundpromenade ). In 2011 the adult swimming in the sound did not take place; due to severe storms, the competition was canceled shortly before the start. The children's sound swimming along the Sund promenade in Stralsund still took place. In 2018 the start was spontaneously moved from Altefähr to Parow due to a strong westerly wind, which could have been a problem for swimmers , in order to continue to ensure the safety of swimmers. In addition, a video wall with a cameraman has been in use since 2018 so that the audience on the Sundpromenade can follow the competition live.

Origin of the participants

Most of the participants come from Germany , followed by the Czech Republic . Other participants come from Poland , the Netherlands , Italy , Denmark , Sweden , France and the USA .

Results 2019, 55th Sundschwimmen

The list of participants of 1070 swimmers was full on January 8, 2019 after 4:50 minutes. As in the previous year, the start had to be relocated to Parow and the children’s swims had to be canceled because the water temperature was only 16 ° C and the current was strong. Of the registered participants, 939 started in Parow, of which 864 reached the destination.

The list of registrations was already filled on January 8, 2007. 965 of the 996 registered swimmers ultimately started. Due to bad weather with a strong storm (wind force 6 to 7 from the west / northwest), the crossing of the Sund had to be canceled, instead a 1500 meter long circuit was swum along the Stralsund Sund promenade through the 17 degree cold water. 950 swimmers reached the goal, 15 gave up.
