Sunil Gangopadhyay ( Bengali : সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায় , Sunīl Gaṅgopādhyāẏ ; born September 7, 1934 in the Faridpur district , today Bangladesh ; † October 23, 2012 in Calcutta , India ) was a Bengali writer .

Life

He earned a bachelor's degree in economics in 1954 and later a master's degree in Bengali from the University of Calcutta . For many years he was associated with the publishing house of the Anandabazar Patrika and was also Vice President of the Sahitya Akademi .

As an author, he has published numerous books in various literary genres, but his preference was poetry . Gangopadhyay was editor of the poetry magazine Krittibas .

Gangopadhyay is also known for his prose . Some of his works have also been made into films; Aranyer Din Ratri and Pratidwandi by Satyajit Ray and Dekha and Moner Manush by Gautam Ghosh . His historical novel Sei Somoy received the Indian Sahitya Akademi Award in 1985 and was still a bestseller many years after its publication, as were the novels Pratham Alo and Porb-Paschim .

Other prizes were the Bankim Puraskar in 1982 and the Ananda Puraskar twice .

Gangopadhyay wrote travelogues, children's books, short stories and essays under the pseudonyms Nil Lohit, Sanatan Pathak and Nil Upadhyay.
