Sunrise Records was an American jazz and rhythm and blues record label that existed from 1947 to 1949.

The New York City- based independent label Sunrise Records was founded in April 1947 by Leonard Evans. It produced records for the African American market in the second half of the 1940s ; mainly jazz and rhythm and blues recordings by Al Hibbler (the former band singer in the Duke Ellington Orchestra ), Mercer Ellington , Earl Hines , Milt Larkin , Johnny Hartman , Curley Hamner and Johnny Hodges as well as gospel music appeared there . The company financially affiliated with the Miracle Records label was located at 307 Lenox Avenue. The label's early recordings were produced by Mercer Ellington, who made sure that musicians from Duke Ellington's band came into play on many of the recordings . Also, Ellington himself, Dr. Arthur Logan, Ellington's personal doctor, and record producer Mayo "Ink" Williams shares in the company. After the financial end of the company (which was to follow the Miracle company a few months ), Leonard Chess took over the rights to the recordings, mostly the Al Hibbler records, which were then re-released on a 10-inch LP in 1956 by Argo Records . The Johnny Hodges titles were taken over by Mercer Ellington for his Mercer label and later sold to Bob Weinstock 's Prestige Records label .

The Sunrise Records label should not be confused with the Victor Records sub-label of the same name , which existed in the early 1930s.
