Suomenniemi [ ˈsuɔ̯mɛnˌniɛ̯mi ] is a former municipality in eastern Finland . It has been part of the town of Mikkeli since 2013 .

The Suomenniemi Church

Suomenniemi is located in the south of the eastern Finnish landscape of South Savo on the border with South Karelia, 46 kilometers south of the center of Mikkeli and 61 kilometers northwest of Lappeenranta . The former municipality of Suomenniemi is rural and has an area of ​​363.0 square kilometers (79.2 kilometers of which is inland water). The community's population was last 752 (as of December 31, 2012). The population density was only 2.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. At the time of its incorporation, Suomenniemi was the smallest municipality on the Finnish mainland in terms of population. In addition, Suomenniemi was one of the few communities without a settlement center ( taajama ) . The main town of Suomenniemi is the church village of the same name , which is located at the northern end of Lake Kuolimo . In the east, Suomenniemi has a share of Finland's largest lake, the Saimaa . The villages of Kakkola, Karkaus, Kiesilä, Laamalansaari, Luotolahti, Lyytikkälä, Pajulahti, Pukkila, Suomenkylä and Sydänmaa also belong to the former municipal area.

From 1689 Suomenniemi was a chapel parish of Savitaipale . In 1866 the place was raised to an independent parish . At the beginning of 2013, Suomenniemi was incorporated into the city of Mikkeli together with Ristiina . During its communal independence, Suomenniemi was part of the South Karelia region, and when it was incorporated it moved to South Savo.

The sights of Suomenniemi include the wooden church built in 1866, the around 5,000 year old rock paintings on Louhtovuori hill, the house museum in Lyytikkälä, the mill in Hujala and the scenic road in Karkauksentie, the South Karelian Milky Way.
