The Super- Class is a series of four ferries that were commissioned by the US shipping company Washington State Ferries from the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company in San Diego and put into service from 1967 to 1968.
history
The plan to build the Super- Class came about in the mid-1960s as a replacement for the pre-war buildings purchased by Washington State Ferries. Among them, for example, the Kalakala , which was in poor condition after forty years of service. The newbuildings were to become the largest ships of the shipping company by then. Their design came from WC Nickums and Sons, who had designed the largest evergreen-state class ferries several years earlier .
The super- class ferries were built at the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company in San Diego and each cost about 6.5 million US dollars to build. The Hyak was launched as a type ship on December 17, 1966 . It entered service on December 17, 1967. Her three sister ships followed between January and June 1968. The ferries were used on various routes in Washington State .
All super- class units are still in service. The Hyak was originally supposed to be the first of the four ships to be retired in 2018, but will remain in service as a reserve ship until at least 2020.
Technology and equipment
The super- class ferries are almost identical in construction, but differ from one another in terms of passenger and vehicle capacity. Like all Washington State Ferries ships, the super- class units have several seating and lounges that are furnished in a simple style. With up to 2,500 passengers, the class has the largest capacity in the shipping company's fleet.
The ferries are driven by four electric motors each, which can achieve a top speed of up to 17 knots.
