The Matra Super 530 is a medium-range air-to-air missile of the French Air Force and is an improved version of the R.530 .

The rocket is manufactured in the versions Super 530F and Super 530D. The F version of the Super 530 was introduced to the French Air Force in 1979, while the D version was added to the armament from 1988.

The body of the Super 530D is made of stainless steel and is longer than that of the F version to accommodate an improved seeker head as well as a more powerful solid rocket motor. The missile has a digital electronics system which improves its ECCM capability.

The Super 530 is currently being replaced by the MICA developed by MBDA and with a similar structure .

Mission history

On July 15, 2019, a Super 530 F was found and confiscated during a police operation at Voghera airfield in the province of Pavia in Italy . The container of the missile indicated that it was originally sold to the Qatari armed forces . The date of manufacture was October 1980.
