Supertouch is an American New York hardcore band that was founded in 1987, disbanded in 1996 and has been active again since 2010.

history

The band was formed in 1987 in Brooklyn and named after a song by the Bad Brains . The group had developed from Death Before Dishonor, a band around the singer Mark Ryan. Supertouch was born when guitarist Jon Biviano joined. They both knew each other from high school . Other band members were the bassist Jimmy Yu and the drummer Mike Judge. Then the song Searchin 'for the Light was contributed to the samplers New York City Hardcore 1987 - Together and New York City Hardcore - The Way It Is by Revelation Records . In 1989 the single What Did We Learn followed, before the debut album The Earth Is Flat was released in 1990 via Revelation Records . This year the band consisted of Ryan and Biviano, bassist Joe Graziano and drummer Andy Guida, although this lineup had existed for two years. At the time of publication, the group was holding gigs, including with Fugazi . In the following years it went on several tours through the USA and Europe before it came to a breakup in 1996 during the recording of the second album.

After a surprise appearance in 2010 at the Black N 'Blue Bowl in New York City , the band decided to become permanently active again. In the same year the EP Lost My Way was released . The songs for this had already been written shortly after the recording of the debut album, but this is now the first time they have been recorded. As a live album, an appearance on the Crucual Chaos Radio Show of the station WNYU from 1988 was released in 2011 . In addition, the release of the previously unreleased 1996 album Guide to the Stars . In addition to Ryan and Biviano, the line-up consists of the drummer Rich Edsell, who was already active with Supertouch in the 1990s, and the bassist Dean Baltulonis, who also plays in Ryan's current band Foreign Islands. At the beginning of 2011 it went on tour through Europe, before appearances in the USA followed.

style

Matthias Mader introduced New York Hardcore in his book . The Way it Was… firmly that the band strives for variety, which however often fails due to the monotonous vocals and the dull production. In addition, the music is "wooden West Coast HC with a slight Rasta hit". Brian Cogan assigned the band to the straight edge movement in his Encyclopedia of Punk Music and Culture . The ZAP Fanzine found the band didn't sound like typical New York Hardcore. In an interview with the fanzine, Joe Graziano stated that he was a fan of Hüsker Dü , Minor Threat and Bad Brains. Mark Ryan decided to become hardcore punk through the Dead Kennedys and Circle Jerks . For the band themselves, The Who was a big influence. Ryan writes the lyrics for the band, in which he presents personal observations and views. He avoids political or preaching songs. According to Ryan, while three of the band members are vegetarians , none of them would be straight-edge. Andreas Zengler from Ox-Fanzine also found that the music is not ordinary New York Hardcore, it could be assigned to rock or indie rock . In an interview with him, Ryan named the bands Scream , Marginal Man , Bad Brains, Minor Threat and the early Agnostic Front as influences.
