Super zoom camera

The zoom range of digital cameras with built-in zoom lenses between 2004 and 2017.

As super-zoom camera , Monster zoom camera or all-in-one camera is called a camera equipped with a so-called superzoom features. As a rule, these are compact or viewfinder cameras for the prosumer and consumer segment. Superzoom cameras are most often used in non-professional travel and nature photography because these cameras are considered a good compromise between focal length range and weight.

In 2010, typical superzoom cameras had an 8x to 26x focal length range of around 35 to 400 mm in the 35 mm format . Often the focal length range can also be enlarged by using wide-angle and teleconverters . The Nikon Coolpix P900 with 83x zoom, announced in 2015, has even sparked discussions about privacy and stalking. In 2018 the successor P1000 appeared with 125x zoom, including its own mode for photographing the moon. The device weighs 1415 g ready for use. With these cameras, the image sensor diagonal is just 1 / 2.3 inches, the size usual in the consumer segment. Superzoom bridge cameras with 1 inch sensors are also available in the prosumer area . Cameras with this sensor size have up to 25x zoom ( Canon Powershot G3 X , Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 III and IV) and can weigh around one kilogram.

In order to get sharp images in the extreme telephoto range without a tripod , the cameras are often equipped with electronic or mechanical image stabilization systems. Such systems enable sharp images with a focal length of 400 to 500 mm with an exposure time of 1/200 second.
