The Strait of Surigao is a natural waterway between the islands of Mindanao and Leyte in the Philippines and connects the Mindanao Sea with the Gulf of Leyte .

geography

The Strait of Surigao begins coming from the Mindanao Sea between the island of Panaon, which belongs to the province of Southern Leyte, and the northern tip of Surigao del Norte in the northeast of the island of Mindanao . It winds from there to the north and runs along the island of Leyte on one side and the province of Dinagat Islands on the other, to finally merge into the Gulf of Leyte .

The waterway is regularly crossed by ferries that transport goods and people between the Visayas and Mindanao. The main connection points of these ferry routes are Liloan in the province of Southern Leyte and Surigao City in Surigao del Norte .

history

In 1521, Ferdinand Magellan's fleet used the Strait of Surigao to explore Mindanao Island and later the rest of the Filipino archipelago after a brief stop on Homonhon Island.

On October 25, 1944, the battle of Surigao Strait took place in the water . It was one of several skirmishes that went down in history as the greatest sea battle of all time under the name Sea and Air Battle in the Gulf of Leyte .
