Sus is a genus of mammals from the family of real pigs (Suidae). The exact number of species is still controversial, today eight species are distinguished, of which the wild boar (or its domesticated form, the domestic pig ) is best known in Central Europe.
features
Apart from the much smaller dwarf wild boar , the animals of this genus reach torso lengths of 90 to 180 centimeters and a weight of 40 to 350 kilograms. They are dressed with a gray-brown or black, bristly fur and are characterized by their trunk-like snouts.
distribution
The original distribution area comprised Eurasia and North Africa , whereby there is a great, not yet fully explored, biodiversity especially in Southeast Asia. Domestic pigs are now common worldwide.
Systematics
Morphologically, the genus can be divided into three groups. On the one hand there is the group without facial warts and a beard, to which the wild boar and the significantly smaller dwarf boar belong, and on the other hand in the bearded pigs, a group that has conspicuous hair on its trunk. The third group are the pustular pigs , which are characterized by facial warts,

The dwarf wild boar ( Porcula salvanius ), which was temporarily placed in the genus Sus , is again the only species of the genus Porcula today .
